The Nunatsiavut Government says the government continues to turn a “blind eye” to illegal caribou harvesting in Labrador despite repeated attempts to bring the matter to the attention of provincial enforcement officers.
A ban on caribou hunting was imposed in Labrador years ago after the number of animals in the key George River herd plunged to record lows.
Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe says his government has reached out on numerous occasions to alert officials to illegal hunting activity, but to no avail.
He says while there have been some encouraging indications of some improvement to the caribou population, “this hunting is hurting that.”
