Enforcement officers from the Department of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture are “actively investigating” illegal caribou hunting in southern Labrador.
The Department was responding to repeated calls for enforcement amid reports of illegal hunting in the region. There is a ban on the hunting of caribou in Labrador in response to plummeting herd numbers.
The Nunatsiavut Government last week issued another plea calling for greater enforcement measures to counter illegal caribou hunting.
The Department says it is aware of a group from Quebec who travelled into southern Labrador last week. Resource Enforcement Officers located the campsite which included in excess of 30 snowmobiles. Officers observed illegally-harvested caribou, evidence was collected and enforcement action will be taken as the investigation continues.
The Resource Enforcement Division is continuing to monitor the situation and conduct patrols, and are in contact with wildlife counterparts in Quebec and the Canadian Wildlife Service.
