The City of St. John’s has a shortlist of four pieces of land they’re considering for the construction of affordable housing.
There were initially five spots identified, but one of those—a lot between the new community market and city archives building on Terra Nova Road —was ruled out given the ongoing demand for parking in the area.
Questions have also been raised about a site on Waterford Bridge Road across from the west parking lot at Bowring Park.
Other proposed sites include 245 Forest Road, which backs onto Quidi Vidi Lake, and a section of Empire Avenue just east of Bonaventure Avenue.
One other site, at 28 Eric Street, has been identified for a project by Habitat for Humanity. A public meeting has already taken place to address any issues in that neighbourhood.
Staff will continue to gather public input around each site and then seek funding, through the federal government, to build more affordable houses.
