It’s remembered as the darkest day in the Newfoundland offshore after the Ocean Ranger disaster.
Twelve years ago today, Cougar Flight 491 crashed into the ocean off St. John’s, claiming the lives of 17 people.
The helicopter was heading offshore when the crew was notified of a loss of oil pressure in the main gearbox. An investigation learned that while the Sikorsky S-92A was certified for a half-hour dry-run time, the helicopter was forced to ditch before it was able to make it back to St. John’s.
One passenger, Robert Decker, was rescued.
Eastern Chaplaincy, which ministers to offshore workers, has held a memorial service every year since, but this year’s commemoration has moved online because of COVID-19.
The service can be found online at the Eastern Chaplaincy website, or on its YouTube channel.
