The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is investigating a possible illegal caribou hunt south of Churchill Falls near the Labrador-Quebec border by a group from Quebec.
The department’s enforcement division is working with Quebec wildlife officers and federal wildlife enforcement officials to try to protect the caribou in Labrador.
This latest investigation is not related to an illegal hunt in southern Labrador earlier this month.
The Nunatsiavut Government this month accused provincial officials of “turning a blind eye” to illegal hunting activity in Labrador, but the province says it is aware of the activity and is conducting investigations.
Boreal caribou in the region are considered threatened.
Last week Hollis Yetman of the Labrador Hunting and Fishing Association indicated that hunting the herds which are already small and spread out, will put even greater pressure on their ability to rebound.
