The bonobo made famous in the Broadway musical “Come From Away” has passed away.
Unga died at the age of 29 after suffering a stroke Friday, March 5. She was born in Belgium in 1993, but spent most of her life at the Columbus Zoo. It was during her transfer to Columbus that her plane was diverted to Gander during the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The story of her five-day layover in the town was referenced in “Come From Away,” a Canadian-made Broadway musical that tells the story of Gander’s response during 9/11.
The zoo was so grateful to the people of the town, that when her first son was born, they named him Gander.
Bonobos are an endangered species, with only 5,000 to 50,000 animals living in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
