There’s a storm heading towards Newfoundland tomorrow that will bring significant rainfall, snow, and strong winds.
Most of the province is under special weather statements which begin Thursday evening and will last through to Friday night.
According to Environment Canada, the Avalon Peninsula will get 30 to 50 mm of rain along with strong southerly winds gusting up to 100 km/h. Above freezing temperature combined with the rain will cause considerable snowmelt and likely lead to minor flooding.
The rain will change to snow Friday evening with a period of freezing rain or ice pellets which will cause icy conditions.
For the Burin and Bonavista Peninsulas and Clarenville area, in addition to 30 to 50 mm of rain, they could get 10 to 15 cm of snow along with southerly winds gusting 100 km/h. Warm temperatures will also cause minor flooding.
For southern, northeastern, central, and Channel-Port aux Basques areas, rain begins Thursday afternoon, mixing with snow overnight and then 10 to 25 cm of snow on Friday.
The weather system is expected to moves along Friday night. However, Saturday brings freezing temperatures which will cause icy conditions.
