Throughout the pandemic the message has been repeated that we should all try to stay home to limit the spread of COVID-19, however, a local women’s shelter is offering a reminder that if staying at home is unsafe, there are alternatives.
Michelle Greene is the executive director of Iris Kirby House—which has a network of 12 shelters across the province.
She says that during the first wave of COVID-19 they saw a decrease in the number of women availing of their services, and they are worried that the current lockdown is having even worse effects.
Greene wants to let people know that shelters such as Iris Kirby are still ready and able to help.
She’s heard the repeated messages telling people to stay home, but she counters with “what if home is not safe?” She assures that they have the safety elements covered, and they are open 24/7 to help.
