Multiple awards for writing in Newfoundland and Labrador were handed out yesterday.
The winner of the 2020 BMO Winterset Award was Eva Crocker for her debut novel, “All I Ask”. She was awarded $12,500. The award celebrates excellence in writing in the province and honours the memory of Sandra Fraser Gwyn, a St. John’s-born historian and author.
As well, Memorial University’s Peter Cashin Prize for the best piece of scholarly work on the history of Newfoundland and Labrador was awarded to Dr. Andrea Procter, for her book “A Long Journey: Residential Schools in Labrador and Newfoundland”, also a finalist for the Winterset Award.
Dr. Procter says she’s honoured to receive the award. She says while it’s amazing for the book to be recognized, the bigger prize is that the story of the students in Labrador residential schools having their stories appreciated.
