Premier Andrew Furey says he’ll see to a full review of the 10-week-long provincial election.
The premier-elect says all issues will be addressed to improve the process for the future and modernize the Elections Act.
He acknowledges that the failings were glaring and require explanations—that includes the inability of Indigenous people to vote in their own language.
Furey says regardless of the pandemic, he believes ballots should’ve been translated into various languages and says he can’t understand why that wasn’t done beforehand, but adds it’s an example of learning from past mistakes.
He did not say what the future holds for Chief Electoral Officer Bruce Chaulk.
Furey has repeatedly deferred to Chaulk regarding problems with the process, noting Chaulk told him the province was ready for a pandemic election.
