A Memorial University political scientist says the House of Assembly should sit as soon as possible to start addressing some of the immediate issues that have been put on hold for the last two and a half months—and that includes a revision of the province’s Elections Act.
The Legislature needs to sit before the end of May to pass another Interim Supply Bill, but professor Kelly Blidook says the issues raised over the course of a highly unusual election also need to be addressed.
He says it’s become clear that there are significant problems with the province’s Elections Act that need to be addressed and believes the three Independents won’t be looking for any changes, meaning there are at least 25 people in the Legislature who will be satisfied with the results.
While Blidook doesn’t anticipate an election to be called anytime soon, preparations need to be made for that possibility given the probability of court challenges.
