The Lake Melville MHA-elect says he foresaw his comfortable victory in the election, despite the controversy in his last term.
While some may have been surprised by the results of the district, Independent Perry Trimper says he was confident in his campaign.
Trimper got about 50 per cent of the vote in his district, with the runner-up, PC candidate Shannon John Tobin, securing only 23 per cent. He says sometimes you find the challenges of the position right in front of you, but has always felt the support of the district and was happy to see such a large margin confirm that.
In his previous term as a member of the Liberal Party, Trimper was called out for making disparaging remarks about the Innu community. Trimper says he’s been in contact with the Innu Nation and will continue to work with everyone.
However, despite his comments, the Innu Nation stated on Twitter that they have had no such communication with Trimper.
He joins Mount Pearl-Southlands MHA Paul Lane and Humber-Bay of Islands MHA Eddie Joyce as the only Independents in the legislature.
