The President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, Sheila Fitzgerald, is apologizing after sharing a post on her personal Facebook that condemns immigration among other things.
Fitzgerald took to Twitter to say she “mindlessly” shared the post without thinking and that it does not reflect her true values.
Municipalities NL was quick to respond on Twitter saying that the “racist comments” shared on social media by Fitzgerald do not reflect the organization’s views.
Fitzgerald, the PC candidate on the Northern Peninsula, was runner-up to the Liberal candidate, Krista Lynn Howell.
MNL says all directors who run as candidates in a provincial election are required to take a leave of absence from the board. They say the 2021 candidates are still on leave and are not currently participating in MNL business.

As per MNL by-laws, all directors who run as candidates in provincial and federal elections are required to take a leave of absence from the Board. 2021 provincial election candidates are still on a leave of absence and are not participating in MNL business.— MNL (@MunicipalNL) March 29, 2021
