An increase to this year’s snow crab quota is being welcomed as great news for an industry that has seen significant cuts in recent years.
According to the provincial fisheries department, this year’s crab fishery will see a 29 per cent increase to its total allowable catch.
Last year alone, the snow crab fishery brought in some $223-million for the provincial economy.
The FFAW says the good news is a sign that DFO is listening to the concerns of crab harvesters.
FFAW-Unifor president Keith Sullivan says harvesters have taken significant cuts in recent years but hails the increased quotas as good news for a sustainable industry.
Should the stock continue to strengthen, the FFAW says the positive trend will benefit harvesters, plant workers, and their communities.
