A rally is scheduled for this morning outside the Clarenville office of MP Churence Rogers to raise awareness about the impact a possible closure of the cod fishery in 3Ps could have.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan calls consideration of a closure of the fishery in the absence of a survey “short-sighted” and “irresponsible.”
The union says natural mortality levels, such as predation by seals, is driving the trajectory of the stock, yet there is no clear plan or action by DFO to address the problem.
According to the union, the fishery supports over 200 local enterprises and their crew, 225 plant workers in Arnold’s Cove and spin-off businesses.
Sullivan says the low quota taken by harvesters is not the problem, the economic impact of a moratorium will be devastating.
The rally will be live streamed on the FFAW’s Facebook page.
