Despite some of the acrimony expressed online, both sides are hoping a solution can be found related to recent noise complaints against a downtown lounge.
The owners of Lavi Seks on Water Street have launched a GoFundMe page to try to raise money for soundproofing following a noise complaint from the owner of a neighbouring dentist’s office.
The club occupies the space recently vacated by the Black Sheep.
Co-owners Shauna Gilpin and Jenesta Power say the building has been a bar for decades and they believe a solution can be found, but they will stand for what they believe is right.
“We’re open to that,” says Jenesta when it comes to resolving the noise issue. Shauna says despite bars existing in the area for decades, “all of a sudden we’re the sore thumb downtown, and we’re just going to stand up for what we think is right.”
Dean McCarthy is the son of dentist Kip McCarthy. He says the noise complaint stems from residential tenants who occupy space above the dental clinic.
He says Lavi Seks plays a lot of heavy bass which shakes dishes and glasses in the cupboards. Despite the fact that bars have existed there before, the noise issue has been worse since Lavi Seks set up business.
McCarthy acknowledges what he calls the “slander and misinformation” being spread through social media where it’s being presented as a PC and LBGTQ issue.
McCarthy himself identifies as POC and LBGTQ and believes there are sound-proofing measures that can be taken to meet the needs of both sides of the argument.
In the meantime, the GoFundMe page set up in support of Levi Seks has generated over $20,000.
