Parts of Happy Valley-Goose Bay are contending with damage and floodwaters left by a rollercoaster of a weather system over the long weekend.
The region was dealt a hand of heavy snow followed by warm temperatures, causing nearly five metres of snow to melt rapidly. That was followed up by a steady period of freezing rain that blocked up drainage systems.
On top of that, temperatures will remain in the mid-single digits for the rest of the week.
Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper says that will continue to cause pooling.
Trimper says with high snowbanks and the frozen ground, the streets have pooled like a skating rink. He says there are crews working to keep the roads clear, but each community throughout Lake Melville is feeling the effects.
The Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Wally Anderson, says the town has never experienced temperatures quite like this. He says when you talk to a lot of the seniors in the community, they’ve never seen temperatures this high for such an extended period.
Trimper also posted on social media that Route 520 had taken a beating and that he will check on the tender to resurface the road.
In the meantime, drivers should watch for potholes that may be hidden under heavy waters, or that may have recently surfaced.
