Nalcor has temporarily stepped in to meet Corner Brook Pulp and Paper’s power demands due to low water levels in the Grand Lake reservoir.
Currently, Corner Brook Pulp and Paper says it is facing an energy deficit as Deer Lake Power is unable to meet its 107-megawatt demands. That, in turn, would mean shutting down one of two of their paper machines—cutting about 40 per cent of the mill’s production.
To offset the ripple effects of such a shutdown, they entered into a temporary energy exchange agreement with Nalcor Energy Marketing to utilize surplus power from Muskrat Falls during its commissioning period.
Once water levels return to normal in the Grand Lake reservoir, Deer Lake Power will return energy in kind.
Corner Brook Pulp and Paper will face a $250,000 tariff to cover the cost of transmission.
