The current vice-president of the PC Party in Newfoundland and Labrador has moved up to the top rung on the ladder. The party has accepted the resignation of Eugene Manning, who had been president for the past couple of years.
Matthew Janes, who has been named interim president, says Premier Furey will be held accountable by the PC Caucus.
Earlier Story
Eugene Manning has resigned as president of the PC Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, effective immediately.
Manning wrote a letter to the party’s executive members yesterday, detailing that he believes he will be unable to remain impartial through the upcoming leadership race.
After his defeat in the provincial general election, Ches Crosbie resigned as party leader and handed the reins to David Brazil until a new leader is chosen.
Manning states that he is considering his own future, including whether he will put his name forward as a candidate.
He may also endorse the campaign of another candidate for party leadership. Thus, he writes, he decided to step aside so “there is no question as to the impartiality” of both the provincial executive and leadership selection committee.
Manning’s resignation letter can be read below:
Executive Members:
Given the recent resignation of our Leader, Ches Crosbie, and the resulting pending leadership process, I hereby submit my resignation as President of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, effective immediately.
As you know, I have strong views regarding the potential direction of our Party, and our province’s future. As such, there is an exceptionally low probability that I will remain neutral through the leadership contest as I consider my own future, including whether I will stand as a candidate for leader or, in the alternative, support another candidate for this role.
In this regard, pursuant to Article 8.14 of our Constitution, the prudent course of action is to step aside at this time such that there is no question as to the impartiality of the work of the Provincial Executive or the Leadership Selection Committee.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with you on this executive over the past number of years, I am proud of the work we have accomplished, and I look forward to continuing our work in the future.
Sincerely,
Eugene G. Manning
