One new case of COVID-19 in the province today, the first travel-related case in five days.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald calls that remarkable, “considering that many provinces in Canada are seeing a significant spike in cases.” She calls that a testament to everyone’s commitment to keep the COVID wave at bay.
Today’s case is in the Western Health region and is related to domestic travel.
In the meantime, some 90,000 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered in the province as of April 5, with 43,780 doses received by the province last week.
Dr. Fitzgerald says there are a lot of things that need to happen between the receipt of the vaccine and the administration of doses.
She says Regional Health Authorities usually have doses administered within one week of receipt. The province received 20,000 unexpected doses of vaccine this week, causing health authorities to jump into action.
“When we know a vaccine shipment is en-route, we have time to plan,” says Fitzgerald. When an unexpected shipment arrives, Regional Health Authorities move to action as fast as possible to plan for distribution.
