Changes are coming to how users pay for Metrobus and GoBus services in the capital city.
Yesterday, over $4.9-million was announced for infrastructure projects in the metro area. Included in that is money for an upgrade to the electronic fare collection system used by both services.
The $418,000 upgrade will allow more accurate fare collection and the ability to offer real time mobile ticketing and phone payment options.
St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says the upgrades will not only help improve accessibility, but will also help their own data collection on the service. As the mayor explains, they currently have an electronic system, but it doesn’t update in real time, this update will change that.
The city says they are hoping to have the first phase of installation completed by mid-summer, with the pay-by-phone option available later in the year.
