Today marks the one year anniversary of the mass killing of 22 people by a lone gunman in Portapique, Nova Scotia.
Flags were flown at half-mast and a memorial service was held to honour the victims at Truro’s First United Church. A province-wide moment of silence opened the ceremony and multiple musicians paid tribute through live performances.
Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin addressed the loved ones of the victims at the service.
He says over the past year, the province has received thousands of messages of comfort and support from all over the world. He says people wanted the victims to know they are not alone in their grief.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also extended his condolences.
He says this act of evil will not define the memories of those who were lost or the communities that still grieve for them. Instead, the joy of each victim will be remembered and celebrated.
