Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of three charges in the murder of George Floyd in May of last year.
The extensive three-week trial peered into the violent incident that sparked global protests against police violence and racism. Chauvin was recorded on video pinning Floyd to the ground with his knees pressed into the man’s neck and back. Floyd was later pronounced dead.
On Tuesday afternoon, the jury returned to court with their verdict—finding Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.
After reading the verdict aloud, the judge revoked Chauvin’s bail and remanded him into custody, where he will await sentencing in eight weeks’ time.
Three other former officers await trial later this year for their involvement in Floyd’s death.
