The nice weather yesterday enticed many hikers to trails in the metro region.
Family and friends tell VOCM News the search was called last night after a 21-year-old MUN student, who is familiar with the area, ended up in the water yesterday while walking the trails with his parents and dog.
The Rovers Ground Search and Rescue, a Cormorant helicopter from 103 Gander, the RNC fast rescue craft, and the Canadian Coast Guard are among those involved in the search, which is being organized from Wade’s Lane near an area known as The Beamer.
Sgt. Colin Deacy of the RNC says the weather today is a blessing.
He says it’s part of the East Coast Trail and while it’s beautiful and scenic, it is a hiking trail and can be dangerous.

The RNC were called to the Wade’s Lane area shortly after 8:00 p.m. after receiving reports that a person had gone into the water off the East Coast Trail.
A Cormorant helicopter from 103 Search and Rescue Squadron in Gander and a Coast Guard vessel from St. John’s were on the scene last night and the RNC, the lead agency, says today’s search will be even more extensive.
The Rovers Ground Search and Rescue, a fast rescue craft and the Salvation Army are also lending their assistance.
One of the areas they’re focusing on is believed to be the Beamer, a rough and rugged section of the East Coast Trail.
Many hikers were out everywhere in the region yesterday with the nice weather. Today will be another nice day in metro.
RNC have set up a command post in the area of Wade’s Lane and are asking people to stay clear if possible while the search effort is underway.
