The capital city is providing a little help to residential property owners who don’t want to accrue interest because they’re overdue on taxes.
The city is introducing an interest-free payment plan to homeowners. Council unanimously approved the change at this week’s council meeting.
Ward 2 councillor Shawn Skinner says the city will allow residents to “pay as they go.”
Residential property owners are usually billed twice a year, once in January and again in June. Previously, if the tax bill for January wasn’t paid by end of February, then interest was applied on the outstanding amount—adding to the financial burden for the rest of the year.
Now, an interest-free payment scheme can be worked out with the city, as long as the tax bill is paid in full by the end of the year.
Property owners can set up monthly pre-authorized debit payments, interest-free by calling city hall at 576-8251 or by going through the city’s website.
