The ten correctional officers charged in connection with the death of inmate Jonathan Henoche at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in November of 2019 have elected to be tried in Supreme Court by judge and jury. Lawyers appeared in provincial court this morning on behalf of the accused.
Henoche died at the Pen while awaiting trial for the murder of 88-year-old Regula Schule in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Charges against the officers were formally laid over a year after Henoche’s death.
Three of the corrections officers are charged with manslaughter with one of the three facing an additional charge of failure to provide the necessities of life.
The seven others are each facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death.
A preliminary inquiry is scheduled for August.
