Weather warnings are out for parts of the island, especially the west, southwest and south coasts.
Rain and southeasterly winds are descending on most areas, but winds in the west will top well over 100 km/h in some coastal areas and gust to 160 in the Wreckhouse this afternoon and tonight.
Wanda Batten, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says she doesn’t see 160 km/h very often, not even in the Wreckhouse.
Winds are already gusting to 100 km/h in the Tompkins area, and truck drivers are cautioned to avoid the area.
Batten says any area which is vulnerable to the southeasterly winds will find it very windy today and tonight.
There are also rainfall warnings for parts of the south and southwest coasts. The Channel-Port aux Basques area could see up to 60 mm.
The heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, with localized flooding in low-lying areas possible.
