A Spaniard’s Bay couple recently marked an anniversary that’s significant to them both.
On April 23, 2009, Robert Lundrigan, who was suffering kidney failure, received a kidney from his wife Bernice.
Robert was on dialysis for 18 months, knowing that things weren’t going to get better without a transplant.
His wife Bernice—to whom he had been married for more than 30 years and who he calls his best friend in high school—stepped up, offering him one of hers.
Lundrigan admits to feeling some guilt about taking one of his wife’s kidneys, but she soon put him straight.
He says her goal was not just about just giving him life, but about giving them as a family, a life.
Bernice says she never once felt fear, except that perhaps the operations might not be able to go ahead. She just wanted to be done. “ASAP.”
The couple celebrated the anniversary on Friday, an event they say has brought them even closer together.
April is Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month and as Robert Lundrigan says in his Facebook post: And fill out your Organ Donor card, ask to have it noted through MCP and on your Drivers License, but most importantly, make sure your family knows your wish to be an Organ Donor.
