A new national survey from Abacus Data shows that the federal budget released last week had very little impact on voter intention.
Abacus Data completed a national survey of 2,201 Canadian adults from April 20 to 25, 2021. It predicts that if an election were held now, the Liberals would win 36 per cent of the vote, the Conservatives 29 per cent, and the NDP 17 per cent.
The Liberals are down three points, while the other parties are all within the margin from previous polls.
Co-Founder and CEO of Abacus Data, David Coletto says there was no real bounce coming from the federal budget, adding that’s not really a surprise.
He says it’s important to keep in mind that with the pandemic and many experiencing the third wave, people are focused on that and less on politics.
Coletto explains that while reaction to the budget hasn’t been negative, it’s not a budget that people love either. Most say it’s an “acceptable” budget given the circumstances but still remain worried about the size of the deficit and spending levels.
However, Coletto says the number of people who heard nothing about the budget at all, was quite high.
He says 29 per cent of respondents said they didn’t know there was a federal budget, which is not unique as not everyone follows what’s happening in Ottawa closely.
