The west coast man accused of threatening to kill local politicians has struck a deal that will see two of the more serious charges against him withdrawn by the Crown.
George Brake’s trial was set to begin this morning in Corner Brook. But instead, the Crown announced it was withdrawing two charges that had caused a judge to earlier deny bail, saying he had to consider the risk to the public.
Those two charges included threatening to cause death or bodily harm and possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose. In return, Brake pleaded guilty to the other two charges he was facing that involved dangerous driving and flight from police.
A single tip from the public gave the Mounties just enough time to stop Brake in his tracks on the morning of January 26. At the time, the Shoal Brook man was speeding toward Deer Lake with a bag full of three dozen knives.
The tip helped police find Brake and triggered a high-speed chase that ended outside the office of a candidate in the recent election.
Brake was arrested without incident as other officers searched his home in Shoal Brook. He’s still challenging that search which led to additional firearms charges. He’ll return to court next month on those matters, as well to be sentenced on the two charges to which he’s pleaded guilty.
Brake was physically in court this morning but remains in custody and will be returned to the jail in Bishop’s Falls until his next court date.
