The education critic for the official opposition says Memorial University must take an inward look at spending before a tuition freeze is lifted.
Barry Petten was responding to the long-awaited report on a review of the post-secondary system released this week.
Petten echoes Minister Tom Osborne’s assessment of the document, indicating there are some good recommendations but some concerning ones as well. One of those is lifting the tuition freeze. Petten says such a decision cannot be made in isolation.
He points to the role of the Auditor General, Denise Hanrahan, saying she could take a deep dive into that information. Petten contends that there is a lot of “lavish spending” at MUN – so first that would need to be addressed, then move to finding savings, and then address tuition fees.
