A Grand Falls-Windsor wellness organization is using equine therapy to help individuals struggling with any mental wellness issue.
The Stable Way- Hose Assisted Wellness Central Newfoundland and Labrador offer various programs related to equine therapy to help treat anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
Peer Supporter Christina Loder says the most common program is the one-on-one wellness session, where the individual will be paired with a peer supporter and equine specialist, who will teach them how to be safe around the horse, how to make the horse trust you, and how to communicate with them.
Loder says because individuals are working with such a large animal, they naturally build confidence, as horses need a leader to follow.
She says this helps build self-esteem, which is often impacted by mental wellness issues. She calls it “empowering”, especially for children.
On top of the general programs, The Stable Way is partnering with the town of Grand Falls-Windsor to offer other programs, including one for new mothers, and one for youth who are struggling with self-esteem.
