Newfoundland and Labrador reported a total of 23 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the weekend. There are now 51 active in the province.
Twelve of those are crew members from the bulk carrier Federal Montreal which remains anchored and quarantined in Conception Bay. One crew member has since been airlifted to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.
All others have been tested and remain aboard the long red vessel that can be seen with almost any view of that side of the bay. It’s not clear how many crew in total are on board.
In a statement to VOCM News, the Public Health Agency of Canada said they were notified Thursday of a sick crew member in need of medical attention, and that the person was transported to hospital by medevac.
They said they’re working with the province to support the health and safety of the vessel’s crew, adding the ship will remain anchored as they also work with marine officials to satisfy requirements of Public Health as well as the Quarantine Act.
Meanwhile, the other 11 cases reported over the weekend were all related to travel, with one from outside the country.
Several flight advisories were issued as a result
Air Canada Flights 8018 and 8016 from Montreal to St. John’s last Thursday, and Air Canada Flights 8008 from Toronto to Deer Lake and 8016 from Montreal to St. John’s, both last Friday.
There are now two people in hospital due to COVID-19 and 51 active cases, which includes the crew from the ship in Conception Bay.
The breakdown per region is 29 in Eastern, 10 each in Central and Western, and two in Labrador-Grenfell.
Officials also say a case reported on April 23rd in the Western Health region remains under investigation.
There’s no live COVID briefing scheduled for today. The next one is planned for Wednesday.
But VOCM News will have the numbers today for you when they’re reported around 2:00 this afternoon.
