Alex Newhook of St. John’s could play his first game in the NHL tonight.
Newhook was added yesterday to the Colorado Avalanche taxi squad, a handful of players that travel and practice with the team to be ready on short notice.
He was called up from the AHL’s Colorado Eagles where he was producing about a point a game.
Newhook was on a similar clip at the recent World Junior Hockey Championship where he had six points in six games.
The 16th overall pick in 2019 could make his NHL debut tonight when the Avs play the Sharks in San Jose—a late start though at midnight our time.
In first reporting the promotion yesterday, The Athletic in the US said Newhook’s draft pedigree and development make him a player worth targeting as a keeper in the pros.
