Three doctors and four nurses are off to Brampton, Ontario to take on a very similar mission to the last healthcare team to head to Ontario—however, this group will work in the William Osler Health System, rather than downtown Toronto.
The team of five leaving St. John’s will make a pit stop on the west coast to pick up a nurse in Deer Lake and one in Stephenville.
Dr. Arthur Rideout and nurse Michelle Murphy both say they feel nervous but excited to get up there and help. Dr. Rideout says they’ve been assigned to Brampton Civic Hospital to provide supportive care to those who haven’t had a break in a long time.
The team includes from Eastern Health: Dr. Art Rideout, Dr. Amanda Compton, Dr. Conleth O’Maonaigh, Amber Hodder (RN), and Michelle Murphy (RN). From Western Health: Rory Tatchel of Deer Lake (RN) and Alice Felix Critchley of Stephenville (RN).
Some are going for ten days, while others will be gone for two weeks.
Premier Furey says his stance on a re-distribution of vaccines hasn’t changed and Ontario Premier Doug Ford has not asked for one. Furey adds that Ford has been nothing but grateful for the province’s help.
Premier says about 40 people have put their hand up to help in Ontario.
He reiterates that this situation is not comparing apples to apples when it comes to some areas of NL in need of nurses and healthcare workers. Says it’s a different need.
