The City of St. John’s has proclaimed May 1-7 National Youth Week by recognizing youth in the community who help make the city a better place to live through volunteering, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.
The Junior Youth of the Year is Margaret Peters of St. Paul’s Junior High while the senior Youth of the Year is Jorja Hinks of St. Kevin’s Senior High.
Mayor Danny Breen thanks the pair for their work both in their schools and community. Breen says he looks forward to this event each year as there are so many young people who give back to the community and deserve such recognition.

Jorja Hinks has been a role model and humanitarian in her community. At eight years old she created an international not-for-profit called Jorja’s Journey, which provides emergency relief and educational skill development in developing countries. She is a member of numerous groups and organizations that empower others including MUN Hope, MUN Go Abroad, NL Go-Getters, and Girl Guides of Canada.

Margaret Peters is a French Immersion academic, leader and volunteer. She is a member of her school’s leadership team which mentors younger students. She volunteers with her school breakfast program and plans special events and food drives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Margaret continued to be a leader for her school band and choir. She is a member of Shallaway Youth Choir, Girl Guides of Canada, and the St. Marks Anglican Church Youth Group.
