The President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association doesn’t see the economic benefit in amalgamating the English and Francophone school districts.
The recommendation comes out of the Greene report, which suggests that combining the school districts would lead to less being spent on administration which can then be reinvested directly at the school level.
Dean Ingram says the report is vague on how such a move would benefit educational and financial outcomes.
Ingram makes reference to the 2013 decision to amalgamate the Labrador, Western, Nova Central, and Eastern school districts into the English School District.
He says there were similar objectives back then that weren’t realised. He feels that it removes a layer of support that will be downloaded onto administrators and won’t be good for anyone.
