Firefighters are seeing a lot more bedroom fires than they have in the past and that’s largely due to the number of electronic devices we use.
Grand Falls-Windsor Fire Chief Vince McKenzie says the flammability and combustibility of building materials and household items have changed in recent years.
He says furniture and plastic in our homes give off an “extraordinary” amount of smoke compared to just 20 years ago.
He asks people to make sure a working smoke alarm is installed on each level of a home and in every bedroom.
“One time all you had was a clock radio,” says McKenzie, now people have TVs, computers, phones, tablets and charges, some of which are tucked under pillows or beds.
