A local senior is warning others about how easily a person can fall victim to scammers.
The gentleman, who asked not to be named, is issuing the warning after receiving a call from a scammer claiming that he had problems with his computer virus protection.
They didn’t get him this time, but he wasn’t so lucky a few years ago, when, while recovering from surgery, he answered an unexpected call falsely claiming that the virus protection he had purchased on his computer was drawing to an end but that the company was shutting down and they would issue him a refund.
The scammers sent him false information replicating bank deposit headers and informed him they had accidentally sent too much money and that he had to pay back the difference.
When he asked how he was supposed to pay back the money, they told him to buy gift cards and give them the numbers on the cards. They ended up stealing $5000 dollars from his account.
The gentleman ended up losing the money but is offering the warning to the public to prevent someone else from becoming a victim.
