The SPCA in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is overwhelmed with stray dogs but the current system used to transport the animals to the island results in only a handful actually connecting with their new home.
A new partnership involving the three branches in St. John’s, Gander, and Goose Bay aims to raise enough money to hire a charter flight to transfer the dogs from Labrador to Newfoundland.
They currently send dogs out usually one at a time on regular flights but that doesn’t always pan out with weather delays and other issues. “Project Rescue Me” would allow the SPCA to send a larger group of dogs via a charter flight.
Karen Mahoney, executive director of the SPCA St. John’s, says a charter would cost about $14,000 plus a few thousand extra for staff and supplies, a significant undertaking.
