A woman accused of stealing more than $80,000 from Corner Brook’s minor hockey association has changed which court she wants to be tried in.
47-year-old Melissa Williams had chose Supreme Court by judge alone after pleading not guilty. But today, defence lawyer Rosellen Sullivan asked for the matter to be moved to provincial court instead.
Sullivan didn’t give a reason but said the decision was made after reviewing the bulk of the Crown’s evidence.
Williams served as treasurer and administrator on the minor hockey board during 2018 and 2019. She was charged with a half dozen fraud offenses last January after officials noticed irregularities with the finances.
It led to a big debt for the association which they’ve since managed to pay off through fundraising and help from the city.
The case will be back in court May 18 to set a date for the trial.
