Community leaders in three parts of the world connected today on the anniversary of one of the most important events in local aviation history.
Harbour Grace, Atchinson, Kansas and Derry, Northern Ireland connected virtually today to mark the 89th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s solo trans-Atlantic flight that took off from Harbour Grace, landing in a pasture near Derry nearly 15 hours later.
Atchinson is the home town of the world-famous aviation pioneer.
Harbour Grace Mayor Don Coombs was contacted by Derry Mayor Brian Tierney a few days ago, suggesting that the three municipal leaders hook up virtually at noon, Newfoundland time.
A small group of Harbour Grace staff including Mayor Don Coombs gathered on the airstrip in Harbour Grace over the lunch hour for the event.
