Young aspiring rugby players in the province will have a chance to shine on home soil when St. John’s hosts the Canada Summer Games in four years’ time.
As revealed this week, Rugby 7s is the host city’s choice sport for the 2025 games.
It’s played on the same size field but at a faster pace since there are only 7 players per side instead of 15.
Liam Warren, the communications director with the Newfoundland and Labrador Rugby Union, says it’ll provide a great opportunity for recruitment for the Games team.
He says once Rugby Canada settles on the age range, there’ll be an open call for players on the rugby union website and social media.
Warren believes Newfoundland and Labrador’s coaching quality and success at previous Canada Games helped get rugby 7s on the list.
This province has won three medals in the seven years that rugby has been included in the Canada Games.
