Newfoundland Power is planning to build a new power substation in Airport Heights.
It would be located on Airport Heights Drive, near the Windsor Lake Water Treatment Facility and will provide power to St. John’s North.
According to officials with Newfoundland Power, the new facility will look very similar to the Pepperell substation near Quidi Vidi.
They say the project will also require the extension of two transmission lines and connection to existing distribution networks.
When asked about complaints received from residents living near existing substations, Manager of Electrical Engineering with NL Power, Adam Wong, says there aren’t many issues.
He says noise isn’t usually an issue, although there is light that comes from the transmitter. However, he assures that is designed in such a way that the impacts are minimal.
The proposal is currently before the city of St. John’s for review. A decision is expected on June 7th.
