The MHA for the Lewisporte-Twillingate district of the province is stressing kindness following the outbreak of COVID-19 in the district.
There are 33 confirmed cases related to the Notre Dame Bay Cluster, with 11 more presumptive.
Derek Bennett says he has been in contact with many of the people who have tested positive and says he’s concerned that some have come forward saying fingers have been pointed at them on social media as being the cause of the outbreak.
Bennett states that it was difficult to hear some of what was being said, which prompted him to take to social media with his message asking for kindness.
He says it’s not a message he wanted to put out there, but he did it to defend those being blamed, he’s calling on residents to pull together during this time.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Fogo Island isn’t sure why they weren’t directly included in the lockdown zone related to the central Newfoundland cluster but he’s confident that Public Health is doing the right thing.
The restricted zone takes a large expanse of the island but stopping shy of Change Islands and Fogo Island.
Mayor Wayne Collins says even though they are not part of the lockdown, they are just as concerned as the rest of the region and are limiting movement and activities.
He says they have been advised to travel only when necessary such as for medical reasons and work.
