The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 in Pleasantville is calling all remaining veterans of WWII to identify themselves to the Branch — regardless of whether they are a Legion member or not — to take part in a special event.
Branch 56 is planning a Night at the USO on July 2nd and is inviting any World War II veterans, plus a companion, to attend free of charge.
The event, which will take place in the 80-year-old Legion ballroom, will feature a steak and lobster dinner, silent auction, and entertainment.
Inspiration for the event was drawn from Rod Deon, a WWII veteran and lifetime Legion member who will turn 100 on July 2nd.
Deon says he always wanted to help the Legion but notes there are not a lot of WWII veterans left and that “this will be a good chance to do something nice for them.”
Another veteran, native of Greenspond and resident of the Caribou Veterans’ Memorial, Charlie Starkes, marked his 99th birthday on the weekend.
