The provincial government will be having talks with Indigenous leaders later this week to discuss how to move forward in the wake of 215 children’s remains being discovered at the site of a former residential school in BC.
In the House of Assembly yesterday, government was questioned about a review of residential school sites in the province. Premier Andrew Furey will be having a call with Indigenous leaders later this week to help guide him on how to proceed.
He calls the discovery of the remains a “sad and tragic day in Canadian history,” noting that Newfoundland and Labrador is not divorced from that.
Furey says he is ready for the emotionally difficult conversations with Indigenous leaders needed to find a path forward, noting any decisions made will be ones of reconciliation.
An update on those talks, Furey says, will be provided this week.
