It’s a wrap for the theatres in Mount Pearl Square as Cineplex has decided to close its Topsail Road location.
A spokesperson from Cineplex says the theatre officially closed as of June 1st, as the company decided not to renew its lease. But it offered its appreciation to the community for the years of support.
The theatre originally opened in the early 80s and had operated under a few different banners during its decades of screenings. It was taken over by Cineplex in 2013 as part of its purchase of Empire Theatres’ assets.
A fixture for the local film community, the location was well-known for its retro aesthetic—including vibrant carpets bearing 90s-era designs.
One of its six cinemas was adorned with classic relief portraits along its walls.
The Mount Pearl cinema was also appreciated for occasionally carrying independent films that would receive limited screenings elsewhere.
While the pandemic has marked a challenging year for theatres, the Cineplex in the Avalon Mall continues to operate with reduced capacity under Alert Level 2.
