There’s a move afoot to change Newfoundland and Labrador’s Coat of Arms to more reflect the times.
Talks are ongoing between the Premier and indigenous leaders about how to proceed following the horrific discovery in Kamloops last week, but the discussions are still in the very early stages.
Andrew Furey describes the conversations as “emotional at times” as they reflect on the discovery in Kamloops.
He says no decisions have been reached as to how best to move forward in terms of searching former residential school sites, but one thing that has been discussed is the provincial coat of arms.
Furey explains that the description of the coat of arms still uses the term “savages” which they feel is not appropriate, and notice has been put into the House of Assembly to have that changed.
