A 13-year effort identifying and mapping the root cellars of Twillingate is now online, with hopes it will help educate the public and offer another boost to local tourism.
Troy Mitchell, who has an interest in international food security, says the effort started back in 2008 when he asked his father-in-law at the time to document area root cellars and their owners.
He says amazingly, they’ve documented 232 root cellars to date, many of which are still associated with the families who originally built them.
While some of the structures are up to 200 years old, they offer valuable information on food security measures taken generations ago that can still be applied today. You can find the map and information on the Twillingate Root Cellars Facebook page.
